How Much Pressure Can A Plastic Pail Withstand

Feb 07, 2025

How much pressure can a plastic pail withstand

The amount of pressure that a plastic pail can withstand is affected by a combination of factors.
1: Types of plastic pail materials
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic bucket: This material has high strength and toughness. Generally speaking, HDPE plastic pail of moderate thickness can withstand a certain amount of internal pressure. For example, a small HDPE plastic pail used to store liquids can withstand an internal pressure of about 0.3 - 0.5 megapascals (MPa). This makes it safe to hold some common liquids, such as drinking water, cooking oil, etc. However, as the size of the barrel increases, its ability to withstand pressure may be relatively reduced because the larger surface area will change the pressure distribution on the barrel wall.

Polypropylene (PP) plastic pails: PP plastic bucket also have good pressure resistance. They are relatively rigid and perform well in some applications that need to withstand a certain amount of external pressure. Generally, the internal pressure that PP plastic pail can withstand is similar to that of HDPE plastic barrels, but the pressure resistance in low-temperature environments may be different. At low temperatures, the toughness of PP plastic pail will decrease, and their pressure resistance will also be affected to a certain extent.

2: Thickness and structural design of plastic pails
Thickness influence: The thickness of the barrel wall is one of the key factors that determine the compressive resistance of plastic bucket. Thicker barrel walls can withstand greater pressure. For example, thick-walled plastic pails for industrial use may have a wall thickness of 5-10 mm. Such plastic pails can withstand internal pressures of up to 1-2 MPa and are used to hold some chemical raw materials with a certain pressure. Ordinary household plastic pails usually have a wall thickness of about 1-3 mm and are relatively weak in compressive resistance.
Structural design optimization: Reasonable structural design can enhance the compressive resistance of plastic barrels. For example, a plastic barrel structure with ribs can effectively disperse pressure without adding too much weight. These ribs can be placed on the side, bottom or top of the barrel, etc., to change the pressure conduction path, so that when the plastic barrel is under pressure, the stress distribution of the barrel wall is more uniform, thereby improving the overall compressive resistance.

3: Environmental factors of use

Temperature influence: Temperature has a significant effect on the compressive strength of plastic pails. In a high temperature environment, the molecular chain of plastic will become relatively loose, the strength and rigidity of the plastic pails will decrease, and the ability to withstand pressure will also decrease. On the contrary, in a low temperature environment, plastic will become brittle, the toughness will decrease, and it will be easy to break under pressure. For example, some plastic pails can be used normally at room temperature, but in a high temperature environment, they may only withstand half the pressure at room temperature.

Time of use and aging: As the plastic pail is used for a longer time, the plastic will age due to factors such as light and chemical erosion. After aging, the molecular structure of the plastic barrel is destroyed, the strength and toughness will decrease, and the compressive resistance will be greatly reduced. Therefore, plastic barrels used for a long time need to be regularly checked for their compressive resistance to ensure safe use.
